March 5th, 2010 by Hutch

I am currently using OSX for my HTPC. I was having some extra overscan and the screen wasn’t fitting the tv properly. I had to use SwitchResX to adjust the resolution to get it fit properly:

So, here are the settings for a Sharp Aquos LC-32D62U LCD TV:

Helveticons

February 1st, 2010 by Hutch

I was reskinning my desktop yesterday and came across some icons on deviantart created by Scazza called Helveticons.

They fit really well with my overall scheme except that the pack lacked icons for quite a few of my most used programs. Luckily, he included a .psd template so I created some extra icons. I also redid the Firefox icon to look a bit more snazzy as sometimes the icons can get a bit confusing when they are all white/gray.

HD Trailers on github and P5N7A-VM note

January 25th, 2010 by Hutch

Hi all,

In my last post I mentioned that I had written and lost a php based site to assist media managers in scraping for trailers. One of the issues the media managers face is scraping for movie trailers. The only large and stable enough repositories out there for movie trailers are Apple Trailers, Yahoo Trailers and YouTube. Unfortunately Apple Trailers seems to remove trailers after the movie has been released for a few months and Yahoo trailers doesn’t seem to have a mass of HD trailers or any real structure (although I have not really investigated it). The issue with YouTube is that while there are plenty of movie trailers in HD quality, it would be virtually impossible for the media managers to automatically select the best trailer from the search results.

CodeIgniter

I recently wrote a php-based site that would handle movie trailer scraping for third party media applications. It was my first foray into building a php site from the ground up and it wasn’t too difficult. The whole process of learning php, mysql and jquery and coding the site took about 10-14 days. Unfortunately during the transfer between hosts I lost everything (never trust that your FTP will download everything overnight and then not double check that it did) and I was pretty disappointed that I had lost the site I had just finished coding and was about to be released.

Changing hosting provider

January 18th, 2010 by Hutch

This domain name was purchased with the intent of relaunching a previous project (a site for home theatre pc enthusiasts – hence the name allHTPC.com) but I threw on this subdomain to jot down and publicize some of the hackintosh related info, especially as it related to the Asus P5N7A-VM motherboard. The HTPC main site was meant for a niche community that I didn’t/don’t expect to get large enough to warrant any serious web server and as such got pretty much the cheapest hosting out there – GoDaddy.
